About the event
We’ve rediscovered a historic dew pond hidden on our farm, now overgrown with brambles and in need of restoration. Dew ponds were once vital for collecting water for livestock and wildlife, and this one has the potential to become a thriving habitat once more.
The pond on site is currently full of dead organic matter with no aquatic vegetation growing. The pond is surrounded by dense scrub (hawthorn and bramble), preventing light from getting to the pond. At this event we will be clearing the pond, after the bird nesting season ends, by removing much of the scrub and clearing out the sludge at the bottom of the pond. We will try to reshape the pond in the hopes of helping it to retain water through the spring and summer months.
This event is an opportunity to:
Learn: Explore the history and ecological importance of dew ponds.
Act: Help clear invasive brambles and make space for native plants and wildlife.
Connect: Meet others in the community who share a passion for conservation and history.
What to Bring:
Weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy boots.
Sturdy gloves and tools like secateurs or loppers (if you have them).
Your enthusiasm to make a difference!
We Provide:
Refreshments to keep you energized.
A guided briefing on safe bramble clearing techniques.
A chance to be part of a meaningful conservation effort.
Whether you’re a seasoned conservationist or just love the idea of working outdoors, your efforts will help transform this forgotten corner into a haven for wildlife and a beautiful community space.
Please RSVP so we can plan tools and refreshments. We look forward to seeing you there!
